fieldnotes photography

notes from the field:

portraiture

my approach to portraiture is a simple one, albeit one that takes a lot of energy and confidence to submit to:

the subject dictates the tone, and the story

it’s a photojournalistic approach, one focused on the emotion and the story of the moment, the happening, the person or people in front of my lens

it’s storytelling. it’s a conversation. it’s a kind of fieldwork, a journey into moments and energy and happenings

easy to learn, difficult to execute. a little gonzo, too

perfect.

I look small and close.

I take my time

my work emerges with a soft and grainy intimacy that once made me feel self-conscious but which I now know is just…my style

if you like a bit of grain and blur, with more emotion than glamour, more honesty than posing, then we might be the right fit

portrait sessions are outdoors, always, in the moving air and the changeable light, in the softness beneath the trees. for children and all their motions. for adults and all their deepness.

notes from the field:

product photography

product photography is its own kind of portraiture

it’s a collaboration between photographer, products and the artisan who worked so hard to bring them into being. also models, location, the light and more

and yet, with phones ever in hand, many creative entrepreneurs feel the pressure to be their own photographer

there’s an expectation that, just because they CAN take solid pictures on their own, they obviously SHOULD do that

on top of everything else they have to do as a creative, as a small business owner, as a human being just trying to exist and breathe

many creatives, artisans and craftworkers have too much to do to worry about product photography as well

and that’s ok

that’s why I’m here.

my sessions are laid back, collaborative and as pleasurable as I can make them

most of the time we take a walk outside, using nature as our studio. indoor setups are also available, if that better suits your products, style or brand

models are welcomed, and add to the fun, collaborative energy of a session

notes from the field:

performance photography

I cut my teeth on performance photography

underground rap shows, sidewalk buskers, songwriters showcases, open mic nights, local bands at crowded (and HOT) cafes

wherever there was music echoing down the street, I could be found following it to its source

as a result, I have a deep, deep love for the energy of the happenings that bloom around live music to this day

it’s an almost religious experience

feeling a part of something bigger than yourself, being fully in the moment and transported beyond the confines of your own body

capturing that energy through the lens, jumping into a crowd and joining the moment – that’s the gonzo journalism, the lyrical nonfiction, the intimacy and presence that encapsulates my entire photographic philosophy

and it’s so much fun
